Filed in Injury Update, Published on June 20th, 2011. Comment?

WrestlingNewsWorld.com: Alex Riley’s right bicep was badly bruised after his match against The Miz at last night’s WWE Capitol Punishment pay-per-view.

As of this writing I am unable to confirm the severity of the injury, however, the worst case scenario would be a torn bicep tendon.

You can see photos of Riley’s bruised arm in the gallery on the official WWE website. Pay close attention to photos #26 and #27.

Thanks to Wrestling News World reader DJ for their help with this story.

Richard Reacts: It’s early so I haven’t spoken with anyone close to Alex Riley this morning. However, if his bicep is torn it’s a terrible break for the young superstar. Last night was his big opportunity and to get sidelined in the midst of a once and a lifetime push would be devastating. We can only hope it’s just bruised but it looks serious.

    THE MIZ VS. ALEX RILEY

We get a video package that details the events that have led up to this match, from WWE NXT, all the way to Riley’s turn on the Miz. The Miz is the first man out to the ring, and he’s walks out through the same blow-up Awesome that he had at WrestleMania. Alex Riley is out next, and he gets a really great reaction from the crowd, which really speaks to how much people hate the Miz.

Miz has the briefcase in hand and he shows it to Riley before the match, yelling at him, so Riley kicks Miz in the gut and takes the fight to him, delivering punches down on the mat. The Miz bails from the ring and tries to run around and tries Riley, but Riley comes in and continues to beat down Miz in the corner. The ref pulls Riley away and this allows Miz to sneak in a couple of quick shots to turn the tide of the match. Miz lays in with a couple of big knees to the guts before delivering a kick to the face to a sitting Riley. Miz lays in with a couple of big punches to Riley before picking him up and tearing at his face.

Miz stomps and kicks at Riley before delivering a sick DDT to Riley, who is on his knees. Miz hits the running kick to the face to a sitting Riley again and then he stares down the crowd, then Riley, for a bit. Riley struggles to get back to his feet, and Miz takes him right down with a big right hand. Riley gets up again, and Miz takes him down once more. A third time, and Riley pushes Miz into the corner and buries his shoulder into Miz’s gut, but when he charges the Miz, Miz moves and Riley’s shoulder connects with the ring post and he falls to the outside. Miz follows out and delivers a running boot to Riley’s face before sending him back into the ring.

Miz pulls Riley’s head out of the ring, and from the floor delivers a running kick to the head, but it’s only good enough to put Riley down for a two count Miz taunts Riley, but Riley connects with a big right hand. Miz is able to lock in a rear chin lock, and Riley falls down to the mat. Riley begins to fight up to his feet, and hits Miz with a couple of punches to the gut, but Miz turns Riley around and delivers a reverse DDT for another two count. Miz looks shocked as he has his hands over his mouth and is shaking his head. Miz gets to his feet and connects with his signature clothesline in the corner. Miz goes to the top and leaps off with a double ax handle smash, but when he goes for the pin, Riley still kicks out at two.

Miz picks Riley up and places him on the top rope, pulling him down into a tree of woe. Miz stomps at Riley’s midsection before backing up. Miz goes for a low dropkick to Riley’s face but Riley curls himself up and Miz crotches himself on the ring post. Miz charges Riley in the opposite corner and Riley shoulder checks him away. Riley sends Miz from corner to corner and connects with a big spine buster which is good for a two count. Riley goes toward Miz but Miz throws him to the outside. Riley retaliates with an awesome jumping kick to the side of Miz’s head as it sticks through the middle and third ropes. Riley takes Miz to the outside where he slams him into the ringside barricade and also the announcer’s table. Cole begins berating Riley, so Riley grabs him by the tie and pulls him over the table, to the delight of Booker and Lawler.

Miz sends Riley back into the ring and grabs the briefcase. Back in the ring the ref wrestles the briefcase away from Miz, and Miz turns around into an Impaler DDT from Riley. Riley makes the pin, and gets the three count, and the crowd explodes.

    WINNER: Alex Riley

Riley celebrates while both Miz and Michael Cole look miserable.

Main event time up next, WWE title match: John Cena vs. R-Truth, The Miz, and CM Punk. Miz is out first. Miz takes the mic and talks about tomorrow’s PPV match with Alex Riley and rips on the crowd for the “what” chant. Miz gives a good long promo and Alex ran in for the beat down and runs off Miz.

    Alex Riley beat Dolph Ziggler

In the Marvel Universe, not every super hero has a sidekick—but if they did, they’d probably want him to be like Alex Riley.

Alex Riley has been on a rocket to the top of World Wrestling Entertainment since debuting barely a year ago. Rising through the ranks as the assistant to former WWE Champion The Miz, Riley has recently begun taking matters into his own hands, stepping into the limelight.

Marvel.com caught up with Riley to discuss his career so far, which Marvel super heroes he wouldn’t mind assisting, and going head to head against his former mentor this Sunday, live during the Capitol Punishment pay-per-view.

Marvel.com: You’ve broken out as a major superstar very quickly. What’s it like coming out on stage and getting that great of a fan reaction so early on in your career?

Alex Riley: Oh my god, it’s a dream come true. You can never expect it—well you can expect it, but you’re not ever sure it’s going to happen. You’re dealing with twenty thousand people out there that may or may not react and your job is based on the fact that they do react. You need them to react. So you do the best you can and to try to be as close to yourself as possible and to put on a great performance and hope at the end of the day that they buy into what you’re doing. So the fact that they are behind me this quickly is amazing. And I can’t wait to give ‘em more, to be honest, because I think once you crack through, it gets easier and easier. So I’m excited, I think it’s amazing and it’s been a dream come true and the last three weeks have been awesome for me.

Marvel.com: Initially, as the Miz’s assistant, the both of you were clearly against the crowd, but now that you’ve split, you have tremendous fan support. Is it easier for you to play up a crowd or against them?

Alex Riley: I just be me. I feel like if I start to try to play a part, I’ll fail. I don’t think I’d do as well. When The Miz and I are out there, what you see [is] really how I feel. We have gotten very close but it’s tough when some guy starts insulting you on national TV and you have your friends and family calling back home saying “Why don’t you stand up to this guy?” And I get the opportunity to now. He crossed the line, and he took it so far that I had to stand up for myself. Now it’s hit a breaking point where we’re in a match this Sunday.

Marvel.com: So going into Sunday’s match at Capitol Punishment, what does it mean for you?

Alex Riley: I get to prove that I’m not a guy that just needs to carry a bag to have a WWE career; and he can prove, if it happens this way, if he does end up winning, that maybe he didn’t need me—who knows? That night and the last three weeks have been very real, and what you see out there is two guys that truly feel the way they do and I think that’s why the crowd reacted the way they did. It’s because they knew this was not just a performance, that there was a lot of truth to what was going on.

The WWE rookie, who’s in the middle of a major push, talks to IGN about taking on The Miz this sunday at Capitol Punishment.

This Sunday, June 19th, the WWE debuts Capitol Punishment – a brand new Pay Per View from Washington D.C.! John Cena will defend the WWE Championship against the newly insane R-Truth, Randy Orton will defend the World Heavyweight Title against the newly heel Christian and former Miz corner man Alex Riley graduates to PPV match status when he takes on his former mentor, The Miz! IGN had a chance to talk to Riley just days before his big match to see where his head was at.

WWE audiences were introduced to Alex Riley on the second season of WWE NXT where he was the protegee of The Miz, who was, at that point, a two-time mentor. “The thing about NXT that was so difficult and also so great and taught me so much about myself was that when we went out there we had no idea what we were going to do,” Riley told IGN. “I didn’t know what was going to happen to me. I didn’t know if I was going to have match or have to talk so I prepared so hard for that show and tried to put myself in as many situations as I could so that I could be ready for anything. And I surprised myself in a way. So I think my ability to analyze and environment, whether it’s a Tough Enough or an NXT, or whatever they have me do from this point on, I think I can handle it pretty well.”

Before sports-talk radio became ubiquitous, D.C.’s WTEM-AM helped pave the way in 1992. Emulating the grandfather of sports yak, WFAN-AM in New York City, Sports Radio 570— now Dan Snyder’s ESPN 980—gave shows to Tony Kornheiser and others, one of whom was former New York Jet Kevin Kiley (“Kiley and the Coach”). Kiley’s son, Kevin Jr., followed in his pop’s footsteps and later played football at Boston College. But once the 6-foot, 4-inch, 250-pound kid decided his pigskin dreams were over, he turned his massive frame and did a top-rope leap into sports entertainment.

With no prior in-ring experience, the WWE signed Kiley—now known as Alex Riley—who rose up the ranks and is now on the company’s main TV show, Raw. He’s also about to debut as a featured performer—in his former hometown. The now “babyface” Riley will take on his former mentor, the villainous heel The Miz, at the “Capitol Punishment” pay-per-view at Verizon Center June 19. Arts Desk chatted up the budding WWE superstar on the eve of his breaking-out party.

Washington City Paper: You grew up in Fairfax, Va., and get to make your pay-per-view debut in front of hometown pals. Geeked?

Alex Riley: I’m excited to come back to D.C. And turning into a face here, or at least moving in that direction, I think it’s a great place to start. If I can’t get [the fans] there, I can’t get them anywhere. … I think I might stay at my old house the night before the pay-per-view and get a nice home-cooked meal. … I’ll sleep in my old bed that I used to grow up in and just spend the day in Northern Virginia as much as I can.

WCP: It will be surreal to sleep in your childhood bed, wake up, and then go to work at Verizon Center.

AR: It’s amazing. I feel like I’ve done some great things with my life, and I had a pretty decent football career, but nothing compares to this. It’s going to be, “How far have I gone?” I’m going to go down to [my old street] Native Dancer Court, and when I pull in [to the driveway, I’ll] remember throwing the football in the yard with my dad and wrestling around with him. The first room he put together in this house was a weight room. … He was always into weights and I would go down as kid, and I remember he was working out and listening to Bruce Springsteen. Since I was 13 or 14 years old, I would go down there and lift weights with him. It’s going to be amazing to go back and remember when you’re 13 and then when you’re 30 and you’re in a pay-per-view for the WWE.

WCP: Did you go to WWE events in the D.C. area as a kid?

AR: We did. My dad is very close with Greg Gagne. He’s almost like Uncle Greg to us. [Gagne is a former pro wrestler and the son of legendary promoter Verne Gagne, who ran the the American Wrestling Association (AWA).] He played football with my father at Wyoming, and he was actually his roommate. My dad would follow him around to wrestling events, and we went to a couple when I was young, and did football stuff with him, too. I was always following [wrestling] and was a big fan of it when I was growing up.
